RE: Best way to recharge house batteries while dry camping

We have one Gr29 12v battery. Boondock most of the time and use a Honda 2000i to charge through the on board 3 stage WFCO convertor. Never had any problem.

RE: What if you don't have a front License Plate?

This whole thread is almost silly. I would like to hear from someone who has had his plate taken while he was stopped by a transito. I doubt there will be a response. Your plate could be stolen while parked on a street. Your plate could be taken by a transito while it is parked on the street. But never when you are stopped by the police. In over 20 years of travelling we have never lost a plate nor has any police officer tried to take a plate. Nor have I ever spoken to a person who has personally lost a plate. Sounds like an urban legend to me. We do not leave our unit unattended on any street in a large city as you could lose more than a dumb plate!

Been traveling to Mexico for over 38 years and totally agree. This thread is not almost silly, it is silly!

RE: New to Boondocking

Water the trees and plants with your grey water, they love it. It won't hurt a thing. We never dump near lakes, streams or creeks. It is a technology that is used in Europe for watering lawns and flushing indoor toilets.
Arizona permits dumping grey water on the ground. All our home grey water is thus disposed of and when we boondock the same. Besides the 25 gallon fresh water tank in our TT we carry 2-7 gallon plastic containers which can be used to replenish or supply, but not often. We normally stay out 5-8 days. We use paper plates and burn them if there are no fire restrictions and pack them out if there is. No problems.

RE: St. Johns, AZ

There are none. Your best bet is Lyman Lake State Park which is better than most private campgrounds. Boondocking can be done anywhere on NFL or BLM land.

RE: Another question about TV..

We tow a 22' TT with an all up weight of just over 4000# with a Honda Ridgeline. Weight on the ball is 410#. We live at 4600' and routinely travel to 7000-10,000' without any problems. Gas consumption varies with conditions with 10.8 for a low and 18.3mpg for a high.

RE: New to RV'ing/Looking at airstreams

We looked at the better TT's out there and decided to pay a bit more for the Airstream. They advertise the Airstream gets 20% better gas mileage than a comparable weighed box and I am a believer. We have more room than we know what to do with and our bathroom is bigger than the others we looked at. Fit ,finish, and fittings were also superior. If you liked your grandmas cabinets the Airstream is not for you.:)

RE: Beef Stroganoff Help

Beef (ground, sliced left over steak, whatever..)
Onions
Mushrooms
Cream of Mushroom soup
Worchestershire Sauce
Tabasco Sauce
Salt and Pepper
Sour Cream
Amounts vary as to how much you want to make, and how spicy you like it. Serve over noodles or rice.
Yup, thats how we do it with a bit of smoked paprika added last.;)

RE: bottom of screen and dogs

Hmmm, our standard Poodles bark "out" when they want to go out and "in" when they want to come in. I guess they never thought about busting through the screen.;)

All of our interior lights are of the double variety. We replaced one side with LED's to save juice when boondocking. The bathroom got a smaller version which stays on at night.;)

RE: St. Johns, AZ ??

Just came back from Lyman Lake State Park. Super camp ground, hook-ups are $19 a nite. I know this is a boondocking site and there is plenty in the area but for a short stay with all the amenities you can't go wrong.

RE: Dog paws

Our dogs have had rattlesnake avoidance training sponsored by the Tucson Animal Shelter. Not only does it protect them, but their behavior alerts you when a snake is near. Rattlers don't always rattle don't you know. I doubt a dog " inoculation" will prevent a human from getting bit.;)

RE: Do Airstreams really tow better..?

It is my understanding that they do tow very nicely but do not purchase one for that reason only. They do not have a lot of head room and limited on slide availability. I would never be able to fit as they are quite narrow with the curving sides and low roof.
I'm pretty close to 6' tall and have more than enough head room. If you are 4' wide or more, I guess you could have a problem.:D

RE: Ultralights and MPG

Since I have a 27' ultralight (3,600 lbs. dry), and gas prices have gone up so much, I was pondering some things. Is there really any significant savings in gas costs to having an ultralight?
With my V8 4Runner pulling the TT we average around 10 MPG pulling at 62 MPH. It doesn't seem to make much difference if the A/C is on, the trailer is fully loaded, etc. If we're doing steep grades, it will drop to around 7-8 MPG. On flat with no head wind, we may get close to 11.5 MPG.
Most people I know who tow TTs (not 5th wheels) with gassers, seem to be getting very similar figures. This is pretty much regardless of the size of truck or weight of TT.
So the only real benefits, it seems, is these:
1) I have a smaller V8 which when I'm not towing will get 22 MPG highway (if I keep it around 65 MPH)
2) And - a big benefit - I can fit the 4Runner in my current garage.
Is my thinking correct here? Are people getting anything significantly different in either their ultralight rigs or regular weight TTs?
Our 22' Airstream runs around 4000# loaded. The Ridgeline gets 22mpg @ 70 not towing and will get 14-16mpg towing @ 62. Worst ever was 10.8 above 7000' into a head wind and best was 18 coming back down I-10 with a tail wind from NM.

Looked at Arctic Fox and the Bigfoot, nice units, but ended up with the Airstream, still nicer.

RE: Water carriers

Does anybody have good suggestions for the best ways to carry additional drinking water for extended boondocking trips? In the past I've always used four 7-gallon water containers, but I found myself making LOTS of trips to whatever water source I located to keep filling them up.
Wow, you sure do use a lot of water. 28 gallons in containers + 25 in the holding tank will easily last us a week or more when boondocking.
